Please join us on Thursday, November 17, from 5 - 6 p.m. CT for our third virtual meetup of 2022-23!

Before we head into the holidays and some much needed and well-deserved rest and recuperation, please consider joining us for an hour of community building and resource sharing. Our tentative agenda includes:

  • Welcome & Introductions (5-10 min)

  • Networking Time (5-10 min)

  • CSEdWeek Resources (20 min)

    • Special guest presentation from CSTA Professional Learning Manager, Vanessa K. Jones, with updates on curated CSEdWeek resources and activities.

  • Resource Sharing & Upcoming Events (10 min)

  • Q & A (5-10 min)

Please register to RSVP so we can get an idea on attendance, but every CSTA Alabama chapter member will receive a calendar invite with a Zoom link as a reminder for the meetup.

Multiple CSTA Chapters have joined forces to host the Super Southern CSEd Virtual Unconference on Sat. Mar. 25, 2023, on Hopin, with the theme of CS Across the K-12 Curriculum!

The unconference will offer a blend of sessions where the topic is chosen by the participants, as well as “anchor sessions” led by speakers and broken down by grade band.

Join CSTA on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, from 6-7 pm CT to learn how to recruit students to your CS class so that CS participation mirrors the school population. Experienced teachers will share resources and strategies for strategic recruitment that you can implement this year.

Do the students in your CS classes mirror the demographics of the school or community population? Usually, the answer is unfortunately no, with significant underrepresentation of girls and non-binary students, Black, Indigenous, and Latinx students, and other marginalized groups. That being said, there are strategies for improving this. Join us to learn how to recruit students to your CS class strategically.
CSTA Alabama has been selected by CSTA to pilot a Chapter Inquiry Group which is a program designed to engage CS educators in identity-inclusive CS topics, safe conversation practices, and community building. Each participant will asynchronously complete the 10~ hour “Identity Inclusion for K-12 Computer Science Educators” online course on Coursera between October-December 2022 and will attend 5 monthly 90-minute meetings (January - May).

We still have a few open spots for this school year and we're hoping that you would consider participating. If you are interested, please complete the Interest Survey and take a look at the recording of the Chapter Inquiry Kickoff Session hosted by CSTA on Monday, October 10, 2022. More information can be also found on the attached flyer

Let us know if you have any questions. We’re excited for this journey and the impact it will have on our chapter, us, as individuals, and ultimately, our students–until everyone has a sense of belonging in computer science.
